US Team Fundraiser A Meet
January 20,
2005
The US Team Fundraiser A Meet (held this past weekend) was a resounding success. In the Middle-distance event (Day 1 and WRE), Toni Louhisola (Finland, ranked 28th in the World!) won the men's competition by a wide margin, with Jon Torrance (OOC) and Andreas Haldi (GAOC) in 2nd and 3rd. On the women's side, Martina Slamova (GAOC) finished 1st ahead of Pavlina Brautigam (WCOC) and Suzanne Armstrong (CSU). In the Classic-distance event (Day 2), William Hawkins (CSU) vaulted into 1st, with Haldi and Jukka Kokkoniemi (Finland) in 2nd and 3rd. 2005
The US Team ESC's head honcho Peter Gagarin has announced the creation of the 2005 Sprint Series. The series schedule includes roughly 15 events so far, with more to come. The sprint series is designed to add a little more incentive and excitement for those people sprinting around the woods this summer. Early leaders in the series competition (after one event) are Martina Slamova and Andreas Haldi, both of GAOC.

US Team's Brian May tops North American Orienteering League for 2004
January 20,
2005
With the 2004 results in and the tabulations complete, the North American Orienteering League final standings have been posted. On the men's side, Brian May of the United States ended up 1st overall, with Mike Waddington and Mark Adams, both of Canada, in 2nd and 3rd. On the women's side, Pam James (Canada) was tops, with Lina Lindberg (United States) and Katarina Smith (Canada/Sweden) in 2nd and 3rd. The overall team competition was won by Canada (with 1395 points vs. 1283 for the US).
Overall WOC
Ranking - US Team 24th
Sept. 20,
2004
With the races complete, it's time to tabulate the results and see how
the US Team fared. Using the entirely unofficial "bmay" scoring
system, the US Team finished up 25th this year (out of 38 teams).
This represents an improvement from the 2003 WOC, when the US Team was
28th (out of 41 teams). The complete scoring table is available here. For the record,
the scoring system gives each competitor a score between 0 and 100 in
each race run (i.e., 100 for 1st place, 100/n for last place, 0 for
dnf/dsq), based on placing within the race. The team score is then
obtained by summing all the scores (men and women) for the given
country. Qualifiers and finals are treated equally (i.e., scores from
0 to 100) but the relay counts as three runs (i.e., scores from 0 to
300 based on team placing).
WOC Relay - US
Teams 21st and 25th
Sept. 19,
2004
The last day of WOC competition saw very exciting races in both the
men's and women's relays. In the women's relay, Sweden out-sprinted
Finland in the finish chute to take gold in front of the home crowd.
Norway was 3rd, 2 minutes back. Consistent runs from the US women
(Karen Williams, Pavlina Brautigam and Erin Olafsen) to finish up a
solid 21st place. The rival Canadian team forged ahead of the
Americans with Sandy Hott Johansen's strong lead-off leg and remained
in front, finishing up 16th. On the men's side, another exciting
finish, with Norway holding off Russia and Sweden to take the gold,
with just 5 seconds separating the top 3 teams! The US men (Brian
May, James Scarborough and Mikell Platt) started well, with Brian May
coming in just 5 minutes behind the leaders in 21st position. The US
team dropped back to 25th on the 2nd leg, which allowed the Canadians
to sneak by. The veteran Mikell Platt closed the gap, but not enough.
The US team remained in 25th to finish 2 places behind the rival
Canadian team.

WOC
Middle-Distance Final
Sept. 18,
2004
A good mix of European countries on the podium in the Middle-Distance
race. On the women's side, retiring Norwegian star Hanne Staff
finished up her WOC individual competitions with gold, a fine way to
finish off her stellar career. Russian Tanya Ryabkina and Finnish
Heli Jukkola were close behind in 2nd and 3rd positions. Canadian
Sandy Hott Johansen finished up 41st, presumably not what she had
hoped for (having qualified 8th in her heat) but still a respectable
result against very tough competition. On the men's side, Thierry
Gueogiou made it clear that his 2003 victory was no fluke, winning his
2nd WOC middle distance race in style. In a tight race for 2nd place,
Russian Valentin Novikov and Norwegian Anders Norberg wrapped up the
medals. Somewhat surprisingly, the home team was shut out of the
medals, with Jenny Johansson and Emil Wingstedt finishing 4th in their
respective races.

WOC Long-Distance
Final
Sept. 16,
2004
Scandinavian countries dominated the podium in the Swedish woods
today. For the women, Karolina A Hojsgaard of Sweden finished up
first, with Hanne Staff (Norway) and Marika Mikkola (Finland) in 2nd
and 3rd. On the men's side, Bjornar Valstad of Norway was on top,
with Mattias Karlsson of Sweden and Holger Hott Johansen of Norway in
2nd and 3rd. Both races were exciting down to the wire, with lots of
lead changes and drama throughout. Holger is married to Canadian
Sandy Hott Johansen and recently ran the North American Champs
(winning of course!), so it was nice to see someone with a "local"
connection on the podium. Sandra Zurcher's beau, Marc Lauenstein,
finished up as the top Swiss runner in 20th spot, a great race for
him. Canadian Cherie Mahoney finished 42nd, a very respectable run
for her.

WOC Sprint Final
- Brian May 41st!
Sept. 15,
2004
After a few hours rest, the Sprint-distance finalists were out in the
woods for the second run of the day. Brian May had another solid run,
but not quite as spectacular as his morning effort. He finished up
41st out of 45 entrants in the final, his best ever WOC result.
Canadian Nick Duca finished one spot up in 40th spot. On the women's
side, Canadian Sandy Hott Johansen had a great race, finishing 30th.
At the front of the pack, in the women's race, Simon Niggli-Luder
picked up where she left off last year, winning gold in commanding
fashion, 29 seconds in front of 2nd place. On the men's side, Niclas
Jonasson won a very tight finish in which the top 5 placers were
within 3.5 seconds of eachother.

WOC Sprint
Qualifier - Brian May Advances to Final!
Sept. 13,
2004
Third day of racing at the World Orienteering Champs - the qualifier
for the Sprint Distance Championship. Fast running and quick
decision-making in the forest, on trails and through open fields.
Brian May had the run of the day for the US team finishing 14th in his
heat, advancing to the final. Eddie Bergeron had a good run,
finishing 24th, less than 2 minutes out of a qualifier spot. With
James Scarborough and Mikell Platt opting to rest up for the relay,
team leader Tom Hollowell rounded out the US men, but unfortunately
mis-punched on route. On the women's side, Pavlina Brautigam had the
top US result, finishing 19th, just over 1 minute out of a qualifying
spot. Sandra Zurcher also had a very strong run, finishing 20th, just
over 1 minute out. Karen Williams rounded out the US women, finishing
26th in her heat. Our neighbors to the north had a good day,
qualifying two runners, Sandy Hott Johansen and Nick Duca, to the
final.

WOC
Middle-Distance Qualifier
Sept. 13,
2004
Second day of racing at the World Orienteering Champs - the qualifier
for the Middle Distance Championship. It was a tough day in many
respects, tough and technical orienteering, tough footing with
boulders and blueberry bushes and tough visibility in the green. For
the US Team, a repeat of the Long-Distance qualifier, with no runners
advancing to the final. On the women's side, Erin Olafsen had the
best US result, finishing 17th, only 2 minutes out of a qualifying
position. Pavlina Brautigam (19th, 6 minutes out) and Karen Williams
(22nd, 10 minutes out) rounded out the US results. On the men's side,
James Scarborough had the best result finishing 20th, 6 minutes out of
the top 15. Brian May (22nd, 6 minutes out) and Eddie Bergeron
(32nd, 17 minutes out) rounded out the team's results.

WOC Long-Distance
Qualifier
Sept. 12,
2004
First day of racing at the World Orienteering Champs - the qualifier
for the Long Distance Championship. 3 qualification races each for
men and women, top 15 advance to final from each heat (i.e., 45
total). For the US Team, some good results, but nothing spectacular,
i.e., no US runners into the final. On the men's side, Brian May had
the best result finishing 21st, 6 minutes out of the top 15. Mikell
Platt (23rd, 9 minutes out) and Eddie Bergeron (29th, 14 minutes out)
also ran well. The women's team posted some solid results despite
being struck by a variety of illnesses. Erin Olafsen posted the top
result finishing 20th, 7 minutes out of a top-15 position. Sandra
Zurcher (21st, 16 minutes out) and Karen Williams (23rd, 15 minutes
out) rounded out the women's team. For the Canadian Team, Cherie
Mahoney had a great race, placing 15th and into the final.
