Stinchfield Woods is a field research area for demonstration of forest management and sustainable ecosystem management for the faculty and students of the University of Michigan's School of Natural Resources and Environment, and other units of the University of Michigan.

It is traditional Michigan ridge and valley with many trails. The map is 5 years old.  It is excellent orienteering terrain with many complex areas. The scale is 1:10000 5 m contours.

We are using an unusual format.  This is a short course for Blue and Red runners, but part of a normal 2 day A meet for Green and Brown.  We will run Blue and Red runners first. Then Green runners will run the identical course as the Blue runners and Brown will run the identical course as the Red runners.

 Course Length Climb Controls
==========  ========  =====  ========
Blue/Green 5.54 km 240 m 16
Red/Brown 4.89 km 190 m 15
Orange 3.45 km 85 m 11
Yellow 2.68 km 60 m 10
White 2.57 km 45 m 9

One week before the event there was a fire at Peach Mountain. Fortunately it was stopped by a large gravel pit that we are using as our finish. The area affected is near the very end of our courses. Because of the fire damage and changes to trails and terrain made by fire trucks and firemen there will be orange streamers from the next to last control to the go control on the White, Yellow, and Orange courses.
Whitestreamered from 8–9
Yellowstreamered from 9–10
Orangestreamered from 10–11.

All other courses may choose routes that would go through fire-impacted areas but these legs are very easy and we are not expecting any problems.

We are using epunching.

No description sheets will be provided in advance; they will be handed out two minutes before the start, as required by the IOF Rules for the WRE. We implement this procedure for all categories on all days.

All courses will come within 100 meters of a massive radio telescope. It appears to be something out of "The War of the Worlds". When rotating it makes loud and eerie noises.

There are many controls just outside the minimum distance for control separation. Check your codes.

Rootstocks are mapped as green ×. We had a wicked ice storm this spring and there are rootstocks on the ground that are not on the map.

SMOC uses the George rule for boulders. George was an early member of SMOC and a strapping 200 pounds. The George rule: If George could not carry the boulder 10 feet then it should be on the map.

There is a 1000 meter walk to the start. Use care when crossing N. Territorial Road from the start and finish to the parking area. The road to the start is an excellent place to warm up. The walk from the finish to the parking area is 600 meters and uses the same road.

Clothing will be moved from the start to the finish.

It is 44 miles from the Concord Inn to this parking area. West on M-59 17 miles, south on US 23 18.1 miles, west on North Territorial road 8.6 miles.

Enough thanks cannot be given to Eric Weyman. His time, energy, professionalism, and knowledge were invaluable to the course setting. There were 41 revisions of maps for this 3-day event.
