US Orienteering Team Trials, A Meet, and World Ranking Event, 04 May 2007–06 May 2007—Sprint
by the Souhern Michigan Orienteering Club and the US Orienteering Team

Sprint Courses: Haven Hill Map in Highland State Recreation Area, White Lake, Michigan

Course Setter: Richard Waldo

There are three courses.
Course 1 (Sprint TT) is for orienteers who normally run red/blue.
Course 2 (BrnGrn) is for orienteers who normally run green/brown/orange.
Course 3 (WhtYel) is for white/yellow runners.

The start/finish area is approximately 1 mile from the park entrance. All courses will cross the main park road twice. Nearly all traffic on Friday afternoon will be orienteering related, but there will be park visitors. Please drive slowly (<25 mph) and watch for runners when you drive to the parking area. A road monitor will be stationed at one of the crossings because visibility is limited in one direction for both cars and runners. Visibility in the other direction, and in both directions at the other crossing, is very good, but runners should use caution at all times when crossing.

Parking is at the large green sheep barn about ¼ mile past the start/finish area (which you will see on your right). There is no competitor parking or drop-off at the start/finish area (unless the primary parking lot fills).

Walking to/from the start/finish along the park road is off limits until competition ends. Also off limits before and during competition are all areas north of main parking, except the trail to the start. The walk to the start is along a park trail and is about 300 meters.

Warm-up: All areas west, east and south of parking is open for warming up. There is a large field to the west of the main parking lot providing an ideal location where you can warm-up. There is no warm-up area at the start, but you can warm-up along the trail to the start.

Clothing return: None—start and finish are at the same location.

Restroom Facilities: There are no running water restroom facilities at the Start/Finish, or at the parking lot.
There are two pit toilets (men’s and women’s) at the start/finish.
There are a total of five at parking: one on the east of the green sheep barn, two (M,W) 100 meters west of the sheep barn, and two more (M,W) at the west end of the field, 400 meters west of the sheep barn.

There are running water restroom facilities at Teeple Lake Beach at the south end of the park. To get there, continue on the park road for 1 more mile past the sheep barn to the parking lot at the road end.

Mapper's Notes

The map is 1:5000 with 3 meter contours, last update 2003, revised winter/spring 2007 by Rick Waldo.

Control Clues
White/Yellow: Black × is a gate post.
For all courses two pre-2004 (IOF) clues are used:
Triangle with × inside is a copse
Triangle with ° inside is a distinct tree.

No description sheets will be provided in advance; they will be handed out two minutes before the start, as required by the IOF Rules for the WRE. We implement this procedure for all categories on all days.

Map symbols:
Brown ×— with stem is a downed tree with rootstock.
Green × is a distinct tree.
Black × is a man-made object.

The courses are mostly open fields and meadows. Short sections of 30–60% green forest may be a route choice. These sections can include briars, sapling undergrowth, and/or downfall. 30% green is quite runnable, but medium green and above should be expected to be slow.

You may encounter one or two of the many deer runs in the park. Some nearly reach the level of “not-quite indistinct” human footpaths. None of the deer runs are mapped. Spring growth is only just now appearing, so visibility, except for thickets, should be very good.

You will cross and may use horse trails. If you do encounter horses on the trails, please be courteous, we understand you will be racing, but use your better judgment so that orienteering keeps its good reputation at Highland.
